Preparing For The Storm

Keighan Miller • July 29, 2021

It’s starting to look like that time again. The BBQ’s, pool days, and popsicles are wrapping up and the sun is setting on summer vacation. I wanted to talk about being able to thrive amid chaos and how it can reflect us living in the fullness of the Kingdom of God. This month, the parable of the wise man who built his house on the rock, came to mind. Many of us are familiar with the story, but what I learned from this story is that life rooted and grounded in the Lord can withstand any kind of weather. In a nutshell, Jesus is trying to teach us in this story that there are winds and rains coming. And although we can’t know when the storm is coming or how bad it might be, but we can prepare for them. How do we prepare? Build yourself up! When life seems to be in a slow season or not so chaotic, that’s when you start to prepare. Read books, pray, have quit times, study God’s word, be building your house on Jesus’ firm foundation. When you do these things, you will be prepared and ready for the storm. Just like on a roller coaster, life is always going to have its highs and lows through all walks of life. As you train and prepare your heart in the good times, you’re ready to take on the chaos head on.

As school is approaching, faster than we all anticipated, I want to challenge you. Do not let stress, chaos, uncertainty, or doubt shake your foundation. Prepare for the inevitable storm that is coming and be rooted in the word. Build your house on the rock. We can never know what life may throw at us, but one thing we do know for sure is that if we are building our foundation rooted in Jesus, nothing can overcome us.

Today, I encourage you, throughout every season of life, to always be preparing your heart for what the Lord has in store for you. When life is good, build your life and grow in the knowledge of God’s truth. If you seek anything from Him, make it His wisdom; the kind that will enable you to withstand the toughest of storms. As you train yourself to desire the gifts of His Spirit above all else, you will bring the hope of His Kingdom to this crazy world in a powerful way, and outsiders will watch as you weather the deepest waters with peace in your heart.

“Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
